When the code screen appears

1. Open the Google Authenticator app.

2. Find the entry for your Instagram account.

3. Read the current 6 digit code under it.

4. Type it into the field and tap Send.

The code changes every 30 seconds. If the timer is almost out, wait for the next one.

Set up Google Authenticator if you own the account

Do this once, inside the official Instagram app.

1. Install Google Authenticator from the Play Store if you do not have it yet.

2. Open Instagram, go to your profile, and open the menu in the top corner.

3. Go to Settings and activity, then Accounts Centre, then Password and security.

4. Tap Two factor authentication and choose your account.

5. Choose Authentication app as the method.

6. Instagram either opens Google Authenticator for you or shows a setup key. If it shows a key, copy it, open Google Authenticator, tap the plus button, choose Enter a setup key, and paste it.

7. Google Authenticator now lists your Instagram account with a 6 digit code under it.

8. Go back to Instagram and enter the current 6 digit code to confirm.

9. Save the backup codes Instagram gives you. They let you in if you ever lose your phone.

From now on, every login asks for the code from Google Authenticator.

If you bought the account

The account details you received usually look like username:password:key. The last part, a group of letters and numbers, is the setup key for the authenticator, and many people do not realise it. In Google Authenticator tap +, choose Enter a setup key, paste it, and save. The app then shows the 6 digit code for this account. Enter that code on the screen above.

If the code does not work

Wrong code every time: it is a timing issue. Use a fresh code and set your phone clock to automatic.

No Instagram entry in the app: the account is not linked yet. Add it with the setup key, as above.
